About our founder

Louise Mapleston (she/her)

Hi! I’m Lou. I’m a consent, respectful relationships and sexuality educator empowering young people and their carers to make informed choices about their bodies and personal relationships. One of my greatest passions is facilitating those lightbulb moments for young people when they realise “Oh, I can say ‘no’, and I don’t have to feel guilty about it!”.

My passion for consent and respectful relationship education grew from my time employed as the school’s program coordinator in Victoria’s largest public sexual assault service.

I’m driven to do this work because 1 in 4 young women, and 1 in 7 young men will experience sexual assault before the age of 21. Young people are twice as likely to experience sexual abuse as a child if they have a disability, are a member of the queer community, are an Aboriginal young person, or are living in the out-of-home care system.

Through my work, I’ve been fortunate to provide actionable advice to people who have been historically ignored from conversations around sexual assault. This includes people living with a cognitive disability and those that care for them.

I’ve designed tailored consent workshops for LGBTIQA+ communities and have worked with individuals on a one-on-one basis to help them increase their understanding of consent, bodily autonomy and the power of choice.

I also work part-time as a Clinical Advisor at headspace, the National Youth Mental Health Foundation – Australia’s largest youth mental health service.

In addition to my work with Check + Chat, I’m an avid performer and comedic improviser. I’ve written and performed musical comedy and improvised comedy shows in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival as well as the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

I aim to bring a creative, fun, inclusive and warm approach to my work with young people and their carers.
